How do certain people deal with the momentousness of history, while they’re living it?
That’s one question author Pippa Green addresses in this podcast interview with Tymon Smith, recorded ahead of the launches of Green’s book, Choice, not Fate: the Life and Times of Trevor Manuel, this week.
One of the issues Green had to get to grips with, in writing the life of a political figure who rose to the top from a base in the Western Cape, was the extraordinary complexity of the left-wing factionalism that obtained in Cape politics during the struggle – and still does. Cape Town, says Green, is “littered with victims of factional politics”, but Manual isn’t one of them. How did he escape being crushed?
