Poetry in motion set the tone for the prevailing celebratory mood at the launch of We Are at Xarra Books in Newtown late last week.
The book is an anthology of South African poetry edited by Natalia Molebatsi – featuring big names in SA poetry.
With performers like Simphiwe Dana, Myesha Jenkins, Phillippa Yaa de Villiers, Mac Manaka and others gathered together under one roof, the launch was filled with vibrancy and rhythm. A hearty debate ensued with all present voicing their opinions on how to keep poetry growing and relevant in South Africa.
All aspects were explored in the debate – from the style and form in which poetry is presented, to commercial approaches that should be adopted to promote the spreading of poetry to a broader audience – and everybody who wanted to spoke their heartfelt truth.
We Are is a thought provoking book that attempts to highlight prominent issues on which the minds of some of South Africa’s most talented and experienced artists are focused. Read an excerpt here.
